So are there any active black metal bands in Adelaide?

It's pretty much dead for black metal here unfortunately, there were a few younger bands getting around a couple of years ago but I haven't heard anything new. I'm sure there's still some bands out there though, HVHI would probably know.

Besides Darklord most of the black metal bands I have seen here have been from interstate. I think there are quite a few fans here, but some of the better black metal musicians move to other states to join black metal bands there. There seems to be a bit of a disconnect between the level of interest and the number of bands.

Yeah, this is my main impression of what has happened. These people probably have other bands that they play live with, but to get into a real black metal band many of them have to move interstate. I think that maybe as a market black metal has passed its peak here. I remember it being really big in the mid to late '90s when most other forms of metal were doing really badly, but since those other forms of metal have made a comeback over the last decade the relative level of interest in black metal has faded a little bit. A lot of people in Adelaide still enjoy black metal as far as international acts go, but I don't see much interest in local bands. It's probably to do with local culture. People will go to see someone dressed up in black metal outfits etc if they are an established band from elsewhere, but no-one wants to do that sort of thing here as a band starting out, because everyone will just laugh. Even Darklord were well established as thrash musicians and then with a demo for years before doing live shows. I saw them live a couple of times and thought it was pretty cool, in a funny kind of way ... just purely OTT ... I think a lot of young guys would have trouble getting up on stage to do that

Although I know people into black metal in Adelaide I think generally people have been more into death metal & grindcore there especially in a live sense. You would think that Black Metal would be popular what with all the mental happy clappers turning people in rebellion away from the lord.
I suppose all the states used to have their stereo types.. we used to say Adelaide death metal, NSW black metal & Melbourne thrash, warmetal old school denim.
I remeber Nocturnes Mist never got as many people at shows as other bands because people werent into BM eventhough every show they did was great. They always reminded me of Obtained Enslavement. If they had played in the Eastern States people there would have appreciated what they were doing.
Plus the turnouts for the few black metal bands that played there like Nazxul, Agatus and Anarazel were poor to say the least. Comparitively Nazxul pull hundreds of people in the Eastern states.
I have seen most of Darklord's shows. The first one was excellent, I think it was at the Crown & Anchor. It was crushing! The corpse paint suited it and it was an evil atmorphere. The stage outfits seemed to get more & more dramatic later on after their album came out.
having said that Adelaide is the home of Nocturnal which is a personal favourite of mine for that Burzumesque style of BM. Also cited as a big influence on Abyssic Hate.
Anyhow if anyone finds myspace links of Adelaide BM bands even if they are bedroom projects please feel free to post them here as Ill have a look..

Nocturnal was actually the first thing that came to mind when I was trying to think of Adelaide BM but as for active bands - totally drawing a blank.

Yeah we are rather bereft of black metal here in Adelaide. Pretty much everyone I know that's into black metal can't play an instrument, which doesn't help matters. I'd happily start a black metal band if I found the right people.
